Obama, Romney focus on swing states in late campaigning

COLUMBUS, Ohio (Reuters) - President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney engaged in frantic get-out-the-vote efforts and made final pleas to voters in a sprint through battleground states that will determine who wins their agonizingly close White House race on Tuesday.

Both candidates sought to generate strong turnout from supporters and to sway independent voters to their side in the last hours of a race that polls showed was deadlocked nationally. Obama had a slight lead in the eight or nine battleground states that will decide the race on Tuesday.

The latest Reuters/Ipsos national poll of likely voters, a daily tracking poll, gave Obama a slight edge, with 48 percent support compared to Romney's 46 percent. The difference was within the 3.4 percentage point credibility interval, which allows for statistical variation in Internet-based polls.

Obama was up 4 percentage points in must-win Ohio, 50 percent to 46 percent, and held slimmer leads in Virginia and Colorado. Romney led in Florida by 1 percentage point, the poll found.

The president, with a final-day itinerary that included stops in Wisconsin, Ohio and Iowa, urged voters to stick with him and trust that his economic policies are working. He traveled with rocker Bruce Springsteen.

"Ohio, I'm not ready to give up on the fight. I've got a whole lot of fight left in me and I hope you do too," Obama told supporters in Columbus, Ohio.

Romney's final day included stops in Florida, Virginia, Ohio and New Hampshire. He pledged that he would handle the economy better than Obama and jabbed his opponent for blaming Republican predecessor George W. Bush for the weak economy.

"When I'm elected, the economy and the American job market will still be stagnant, but I'm not going to waste any time complaining about my predecessor," Romney said in Columbus.

"I'm not just going to take office on January 20. I'm going to take responsibility for that office," he said.

The candidates are seeking to piece together the 270 Electoral College votes needed for victory in the state-by-state battle for the presidency. Despite the close national opinion polls, Obama has an easier path to victory: If he wins the three states he was visiting on Monday - Wisconsin, Ohio and Iowa - then he would likely carry the day.

OHIO COULD BE DECISIVE

All eyes were on the Midwestern state of Ohio, whose 18 electoral votes could be decisive. Romney, looking for any edge possible, planned last-second visits on Tuesday to both Ohio and Pennsylvania, aides said.

The visits to the areas around Cleveland and Pittsburgh would be aimed at driving turnout. And the Pittsburgh stop could be as much about Ohio as Pennsylvania, since many in eastern Ohio watch Pittsburgh television.

Romney's path to the White House becomes much harder should he lose Ohio. The state has been leaning toward Obama - its unemployment rate is lower than the 7.9 percent national average and its heavy dependence on auto-related jobs meant the bailout to auto companies that Obama pursued in 2009 is popular.

Both campaigns expressed confidence that their candidate would win, and there were enough polls to bolster either view.

There were clear signs that Obama held an edge. A CNN/ORC poll, for instance, showed him up in Ohio by 50 percent to 47 percent.

The close margins in state and national polls suggested the possibility of a cliffhanger that could be decided by which side has the best turnout operation and gets its voters to the polls.

Whoever wins will have a host of challenges to confront. The top priority will be the looming "fiscal cliff" of spending cuts and tax increases that would begin with the new year.

The balance of power in Congress also will be at stake on Tuesday, with Obama's Democrats now expected to narrowly hold their Senate majority and Romney's Republicans favored to retain control of the House of Representatives.

In a race where the two candidates and their party allies raised a combined $2 billion, the most in U.S. history, both sides have pounded the heavily contested battleground states with an unprecedented barrage of ads.

Sandy pounds Bahamas after killing 21 in Caribbean

NASSAU, Bahamas (AP) ? Hurricane Sandy raged through the Bahamas early Friday after leaving 21 people dead across the Caribbean, following a path that could see it blend with a winter storm and reach the U.S. East Coast as a super-storm next week.

Sandy knocked out power, flooded roads and cut off islands in the storm-hardened Bahamas as it swirled past Cat Island and Eleuthera, but authorities reported no deaths in the scattered archipelago.

"Generally people are realizing it is serious," said Caroline Turnquest, head of the Red Cross in the Bahamas, who said 20 shelters were opened on the main island of New Providence.

Sandy, which weakened to a category 1 hurricane Thursday night, caused havoc in Cuba early in the day, killing 11 people in eastern Santiago and Guantanamo provinces as its howling winds and rain toppled houses and ripped off roofs. Authorities said it was Cuba's deadliest storm since July 2005, when category 5 Hurricane Dennis killed 16 people and caused $2.4 billion in damage.

Sandy also killed one person while crossing Jamaica on Wednesday and 10 in Haiti, where heavy rains from the storm's outer bands caused flooding in the impoverished and deforested country.

Late Thursday, the hurricane's center was about 185 miles (300 kilometers) east-southeast of Freeport, Bahamas. The storm had maximum sustained winds of 90 mph (150 kph) and was moving north-northwest at 13 mph (20 kph).

Forecasters warned that Sandy will likely mix with a winter storm to create a monster storm in the eastern U.S. next week whose effects will be felt along the entire Atlantic Coast from Florida to Maine and inland to Ohio.

Sandy, which crossed Cuba and reached the Bahamas as a category 2 hurricane, was expected to maintain its category 1 storm status for the next several days.

In the Bahamas, power was out on Acklins Island and most roads there were flooded, government administrator Berkeley Williams said.

On Ragged Island in the southern Bahamas, the lone school was flooded.

"We have holes in roofs, lost shingles and power lines are down," said Charlene Bain, local Red Cross president. "But nobody lost a life, that's the important thing."

Steven Russell, an emergency management official in Nassau, said that docks on the western side of Great Inagua island had been destroyed and that the roof of a government building was partially ripped off.

Sooner Halvorson, a 36-year-old hotel owner from Colorado who recently moved to the Bahamas, said she and her husband, Matt, expected to ride out the storm with their two young children, three cats, two dogs and a goat at their Cat Island resort.

"We brought all of our animals inside," she said, though she added that a horse stayed outside. "She's a 40-year-old horse from the island. She's been through tons of hurricanes."

On Great Exuma island, guest house operator Veronica Marshall supplied her only customer with a flashlight and some food before Sandy bore down. She said she was confident that she and her business would make it through intact.

"I'm 73 years old and I've weathered many storms," she said.

Tropical storm conditions were possible for Florida's southeastern coast, the Upper Keys and Florida Bay by Friday morning.

Hurricane Sandy was expected to churn through the central and northwest Bahamas by Friday afternoon and then head northward off the U.S. coast.

With storm conditions projected to hit New Jersey with tropical storm-force winds Tuesday, there was a 90 percent chance that most of the U.S. East Coast would get steady gale-force winds, flooding, heavy rain and maybe snow starting Sunday and stretching past Wednesday, U.S. forecaster Jim Cisco said.

In an announcement at the end of Cuba's Thursday night newscast, Cuban authorities said the island's 11 dead included a 4-month-old boy who was crushed when his home collapsed and an 84-year-old man in Santiago province.

Santiago, Cuba's second largest city near the eastern tip of the island, was spared the worst of the storm, which also slammed the provinces of Granma, Holguin and Las Tunas.

There were no reports of injuries at the U.S. naval base at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba, but there were downed trees and power lines, said Kelly Wirfel, a base spokeswoman. Officials canceled a military tribunal session scheduled for Thursday for the prisoner charged in the 2000 attack on the Navy destroyer USS Cole.

In Haiti, Joseph Edgard Celestin, a spokesman for the civil protection office, said the country's death toll stood at nine, including three people who died while trying to cross storm-swollen rivers in southwestern Haiti. He did not provide specifics of how other people died.

Officials reported flooding across Haiti, where many of the 370,000 people still displaced by the devastating 2010 earthquake scrambled for shelter. More than 1,000 people were evacuated from 11 quake settlements, according to the International Organization for Migration.

Sandy was blamed for the death of an elderly man in Jamaica.

The top five in The Associated Press college football poll has been rearranged for a second straight week, with Florida, Kansas State and Notre Dame moving up in the rankings.

No. 1 Alabama and No. 2 Oregon hold the top two spots for a fourth straight week. The changes came behind them, where the Gators move up one spot to No. 3, and the fourth-ranked Wildcats and fifth-ranked Fighting Irish both jump two places.

The shuffling comes after a second straight Saturday in which multiple top-five teams lost. South Carolina fell 23-21 at LSU on Saturday night and drops from No. 3 to No. 9. West Virginia slides from No. 5 to No. 17 after getting routed 49-14 at Texas Tech. The Red Raiders move into the rankings at 18th.

Former Coastal Alabama prep stars Mark Barron and Ellis Lankster made the first interceptions of their NFL careers on Sunday -- a day when defenders stepped into the spotlight.

Barron, who starred at St. Paul's before becoming an All-American at Alabama, led Tampa Bay's defensive effort in the Buccaneers' 38-10 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs. Barron topped the Bucs with eight tackles, including two behind the line of scrimmage.

Barron, who plays strong safety for the Bucs, grabbed a pass thrown by Kansas City quarterback Brady Quinn at the Tampa Bay 7-yard line after the ball had been tipped. Barron's pick, which he returned 12 yards, kept the score at 0-0 in the first quarter. Barron also knocked down a pass during the game.

Former Vigor standout Ellis Lankster helped the New York Jets beat the Indianapolis Colts 35-9. The Jets' fifth defensive back, Lankster had three tackles on defense, plus a special-teams stop. He intercepted a deep pass thrown by Colts quarterback Andrew Luck for wide receiver Donnie Avery, and the play ended up as a touchback for the Jets.

Nick Fairley, who starred a Williamson before becoming an All-American at Auburn, had his most active day of the season for the Detroit Lions in their 26-23 overtime victory against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Fairley started at defensive tackle and was credited with two tackles, three quarterback hurries and one pass defended. In the overtime period, he teamed with defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch to sack Philadelphia quarterback Michael Vick.

Former Baldwin County and Alabama standout Wallace Gilberry also had a sack on Sunday, throwing Cleveland quarterback Brandon Weeden for a 9-yard loss. However, Gilberry's Cincinnati Bengals were beaten by the Browns 34-24.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama is hailing the rebound of the U.S. auto industry, pointing to progress since his administration rescued General Motors and Chrysler.

Obama says in his weekly radio and Internet address that auto sales are the highest they've been in more than four years and the industry has created nearly a quarter of a million new jobs.

Automakers are large employers in Ohio, one of the pivotal states in the race between Obama and Republican Mitt Romney.

Markwayne Mullin, an Oklahoma Republican running for Congress, says in the GOP address that the Obama administration has pushed regulations that make it difficult for businesses.

He says the economy "doesn't need more meddling ? it needs more certainty."

Walmart Offers Health Insurance - Business Insider

MetLife, Walmart and an iconic beagle with droopy ears have forged a partnership to sell life insurance to bargain-hunting shoppers.

The New York-based insurer now offers a prepaid life insurance policy in about 200 Walmart stores in Georgia and South Carolina. Packaging and promotional materials for the one-year policies, which start at $69 for $10,000 in death benefits for people ages 18 to 44, feature the puckish image of Snoopy, the "Peanuts" canine created by Charles Schulz. The big-box chain store, headquartered in Bentonville, Ark., and recognized as the world's biggest retailer, follows in the steps of Costco, which began offering health insurance in nine states last April. Costco hooked up with Aetna in its insurance deal. (See: "Ready to put health insurance on your Costco shopping list?")

Walmart's clout attracted the insurer

Shane Winn, a MetLife spokesperson, said the joint venture with Walmart will provide the largest U.S. life insurer in the U.S. with access to the retailer's broad consumer base.

"With 84 percent of Americans having shopped there in the past year, Walmart provides the type of reach and scale that MetLife seeks, so we can bring this product to the widest possible audience," said Winn.

Winn described the partnership as "a pilot program" with no immediate plans to offer policies beyond South Carolina and Georgia. But if sales are good in those states, he noted, it would make good business sense for MetLife to consider marketing to other regions.

The policies vary according to age and how much coverage you want. People aged 60 to 65 pay $429 a year for $25,000 worth of coverage, while those 18 to 44 can get a one-year, $10,000 policy for $69.

So how does the process work? Walmart shoppers buy cards equal to the policy's cost. From there, they'd call MetLife, which would ask questions about their health and, if approved, activate the policy. Those who don't qualify can get a refund at Walmart, Winn says. (See: "Life insurance basics.")

New life insurance trend: cutting out the middle-man

MetLife has made it clear since its earnings report in May that it wants to cut expenses by $600 million by 2016. One of the ways to do this is to focus more on direct sales -- like selling insurance on the web or at Walmart. Direct sales of life insurance could climb to 13 percent of the nationwide life insurance market in 2016, up from the 8 percent in 2010, according to a company presentation following the report.

But Winn stressed that the Walmart partnership is not about cost cutting; it's more about finding an untapped revenue stream in a new market.

Sarah Spencer, a Walmart spokesperson, told Bloomberg news that this is the first time the retailer has sold insurance. She added that Walmart is trying to expand its financial services offerings and that it's too early to judge customers' response to MetLife's products.

LinkedIn added new products for sales people and recruiters yesterday, and Wall Street analysts say both will add big money to the company's top line.

The sales tool is called Sales Navigator. Evercore analyst Ken Sena says it could add $600 million to LinkedIn revenues over the next five years. He's upgraded the stock to "overweight," meaning he think it will out perform its sector of the next eight quarters. ?He's bumped his price target from $115 to $140.

Doug Anmuth at JP Morgan is more excited about a new recruiting tool called Talent Brand Index, which "provides employers a metric to measure and benchmark their brand strength on LinkedIn."

"Through member activity such as comments, page visits, and follower statistics, recruiters can assess their talent brand reach and engagement, and rank it against their peers."

Anmuth also likes how easy LinkedIn now makes it for people to follow companies because these lists make it easier for recruiters to know who likes which of their clients.

Already "overweight" on LinkedIn he says the new tool will create "deeper corporate penetration and increasing member engagement" that will "drive strong results going forward."

Google just announced a slick new sidebar for its mobile home page, which is maybe a little overdue, but we'll take it.

Previously, Google's mobile page used a tab-style menu at the top, but it's finally realized that the sidebar is where it's at -- well, at least according to social networking sites like Facebook, and even music-streaming services like Spotify, where the sidebar is king.

Now when you use Google's mobile page you'll notice a new menu button in the upper left; just tap it to pull up your options. You'll can also find your Google+ notifications here, along with a share button.

As an author, and speaking on behalf of all of us collectively, our primary goal in writing a book is to achieve blockbuster sales and mega success. It's the ultimate dream happy ending for authors, even if the novels and books we write don't require a happy ending for the readers. For some, it may even be the reason for writing it.

However, the marketing part is often an afterthought for many authors. Instead, we write about a topic or story because we like it, thinking that everyone else who reads it will automatically like it, too. "Of course people will love it!"

Problem is, how will they know about it? How will they realize you have written a book so likable that it will hit the bestseller lists? They won't.

So, we boldly tell our family, peers and friends about our book. We expect that announcement to propel sales. Surprisingly, only a few will buy it. That's because your peers are not your target audience!

Well, then, isn't that a smack of reality? After that last word is edited and the cover has been created and the book is finally ready to publish, what's next?

The hard part. Selling it.

Book marketing is different than book writing

Sadly, most books don't make it on the bestseller lists. Some may reach marginal sales, at best. Even the best intentions made by authors to push their book sales to new heights can be halted by the very things that kept them from writing it in the first place.
Time. It takes a lot of time to promote a book, as many authors quickly realize. It also takes a special kind of expertise, one that many authors don't have (yet). Marketing and writing are two completely different skill sets.

However, that should not discourage any author from living the dream of putting pen to paper, so to speak. Marketing can be learned and there are a ton of great resources out there to do it.

Authors have to think about their books differently, almost in a backwards fashion. By putting emphasis on the "happy ending" from the very beginning and keeping the end result (sales!) in mind, every author can create a marketable book. Hence, rather than simply focusing on writing about a topic that you think is great ? only to discover that it's very tough to break into any market with ? it's often smarter to determine a specific niche even before making all of that effort.

The most important forethought before writing a book

Consider this. As an author, you have an idea or story that you wish to share. But instead of thinking about it traditionally, perhaps you could adopt an outsider's perspective of your work? Ask these three questions before ever typing so much as one sentence of your book:

• What makes my story different than any other story on the planet?
• What type of readers would be interested in my story?
• What is the best fit/audience for me to market my finished book?

For example, as a ghostwriter I have written a number of autobiographies for non-celebrity people who had a compelling life story. It is a dream of many people to share their life stories, both to inspire others and to feel a sense of accomplishment.

However, before ever agreeing to write the book, I sit down with them and ask, "To which type of market(s) do you wish to sell your book?" This leaves them dumbfounded. They have just spilled out their awesome story, secrets and near death experiences. They think that everyone in the world will want to buy the book just because the story is so captivating, and of course, it should be made into a movie shortly thereafter.

Most of the people who have a story to tell do not have any clue as to where they will sell it. They just want to tell the story. It is a common misconception that writing a book alone will equate to sales.

Honestly, marketing is not one of those bridges you can just cross when you get to it. Instead, propose several markets and intertwine these ideas through the words chosen for the book.

How to think of markets

BE MORE SPECIFIC about your target audience. Instead of just saying that you will write a "children's book" in general, try to zero in on specific age groups, target audiences, etc. to make your book more attractive to buyers after it is finished. There are thousands of children's books! So, think about other avenues to sell yours. School fairs? Church fundraisers? Academic events? It is highly unlikely that Barnes & Noble will be blowing up your phone, so think elsewhere!

In this fashion, you can leverage specific industries that are lacking competitiveness by writing about a topic that is sellable, rather than just "likable" by you, the author. This one thing could mean the difference between stellar sales; or lack thereof.

So, instead of waiting until the end of your book is completed ? only to have wasted (years of!) time and effort ? jot down the Top 5 Markets you could potentially sell your book. Then, while you're in the midst of writing the next, biggest, greatest all-American novel, make sure you add subject matter into the context of the book that will fulfill its purpose within those segments.

Also, do some research about the book beforehand. Don't choose a topic that has been done a hundred times with recycled information. That's not so original. It's also difficult to market. Find a completely unique title, subject matter and angle than other authors have used. You're a writer, for crying out loud. It's your job to be creative.
Let's see some fresh, new, invigorating niche topics. Let that be your happy ending to a marketable concept as an author. Maybe, just maybe you can land a spot on the bestseller list. Kudus to you if you do!

Tonight's 90-minute vice presidential debate in Danville, Kentucky, will ostensibly give equal treatment to domestic and foreign policy issues, but a spate of recent international events (the Benghazi terrorist attack, "green-on-blue" killings in Afghanistan), and the predilections of moderator Martha Raddatz (the senior foreign affairs correspondent for ABC News) could bring global affairs to the forefront. Here are the X factors to look out for:

Martha Raddatz as?Referee?

Tonight's?format?will include nine 10-minute segments in which "each candidate will have two minutes to respond to an opening question. The moderator will then lead a discussion." Will Raddatz aggressively rebut bogus assertions or sit by passively?? la?Jim Lehrer? Odds are, she won't want to be seen as a Lehrer-esque doormat, and on foreign policy issues, her depth of experience could be deadly for the candidates. "Raddatz has traveled to Pakistan and Afghanistan dozens of times, and to Iraq 21 times to cover the ongoing conflict," according to?her bio. "She was on the last convoy out of Iraq and is the only television reporter allowed to cover a combat mission over Afghanistan in an F15 fighter jet, spending nearly 10 hours in the air on two separate missions."

As the former chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee with 36 years in Congress, Vice President Joe Biden has a great deal more foreign policy experience than Paul Ryan (even if all of that experience isn't necessarily flattering). By comparison, Ryan's 13 years in Congress have been consumed with domestic budgetary concerns in his role as chairman of the House Budget Committee. When Ryan does talk foreign policy, it's riddled with contradictions about everything from the Arab Spring to Chinese trade, as Slate's Fred Kaplan outlined in August. Biden will have an opportunity to speak from experience and a depth of knowledge, but don't look for him to go all wonky on free-trade agreements and international?tariffs: The line everyone is anticipating is ?Osama bin Laden is dead and General Motors is alive."

Benghazi Terror Attacks

What Ryan lacks for experience he can make up for in current events, which aren't playing out in the administration's favor. Yesterday, a House hearing revealed that State Department officials acknowledged they'd rejected repeated security requests in Benghazi during the weeks leading up to the September 11 attack. How come, and why is the FBI investigation into the killings taking so long?, Ryan might ask. Also, why did the administration?repeatedly?misstate?the nature of the attacks? Expect hawkish rhetoric from Ryan on how Obama's "muddling" foreign policy has projected weakness in the Middle East. Expect Biden to push back that Republican budget cuts put embassy security in jeopardy around the world.?

Afghanistan

The uptick in so-called "green-on-blue" attacks by Afghan national security forces have deteriorated morale and jeopardized NATO's withdrawal strategy. That said, there aren't many differences between the two candidates on Afghanistan. Both Mitt Romney and Barack Obama support a withdrawal date of 2014. The major difference is that the Romney campaign opposes the fact that Obama announced that withdrawal date ahead of time, which allegedly gave the Taliban a signal they could wait this out. The Obama administration argues that setting a timeline was necessary to motivate Afghan national security forces.

Sequestration

A major policy position that effects both the U.S. economy and foreign policy is sequestration, or the $500 million in automatic cuts on defense and domestic spending that go into effect in January if Congress doesn't act. This is a foreign policy subject that's right in Ryan's wheelhouse: It involves budgets and numbers and not a lot of history. Still, Biden should be able to hold his own as well.

Each year, our Meadowbrook Waldorf School community comes together to design, plan and execute a Holiday Faire event unlike any other in the area. ?I am happy to announce that it grows each year in size and stature as throngs of visitors flock from the tri-state area and beyond to share our magical weekend.

With enormous heart and soul, we strive to bring visitors to our campus so that we can inspire them with the ?feeling? of what this amazing season is really?all about.

It?s hard to imagine that there was a time in my adult life that I had begun dread this seasonal celebration. I was highly resentful of the garish display of premature holiday ?shlock? in the aisles of every store I happened to go in months ahead of schedule. The homogenous blanket of ho hum sameness seemed as empty and soul-less as the eyes of the mass produced ?gifts? ?that sat waiting forlornly for salvation from instant gratification, ?only to be then discarded into the pile of ever growing ?stuff? our culture seems driven to accumulate. ?The ?insanity? of this phenomenon depressed and saddened me, and I know ?now; from the crowds that come and share in our festivities, ?that I was not alone. I think we all long to add the magic and meaning back into this?occasion- and I gratefully found it waiting in the hallways and outdoors of our school as it was temporarily transformed to capture the authentic light of the holidays, I urge you to come, bring your family or friends and join us to share in this wonderous occasion.
