US women top NKorea 1-0, win Olympic soccer group

MANCHESTER, England (AP) ? Abby Wambach became the first non-British woman to score a goal at Old Trafford. She and her teammates celebrated by coercing Hope Solo to get on the ground and do "the worm."

There were other such moments unfamiliar to the venerable home of Manchester United on Tuesday, when chants of "U-S-A!" echoed for the Americans' 1-0 win over North Korea in front of 29,522 fans ? easily the largest crowd ever to occupy the familiar red seats for a women's game.

"The worm at Old Trafford! Are you kidding me?" Solo said.

The victory gave the U.S. team first place in its group with three wins in three games, the first time the Americans have ever swept their group opponents in Olympic play. They were already assured a berth in the next round entering the game, and they'll now move on to Newcastle for a quarterfinal match on Friday.

Although claiming to be a reluctant participant, Solo and captain Christie Rampone flopped to the ground after Wambach's goal in the 25th minute. The other nine players joined hands, wriggled their arms like a giant worm and pointed to the pair of players doing the funky dance move from the 1970s and '80s.

"Hope doesn't get involved in the celebrations very often," Wambach said. "And so we wanted to get her involved, and she said the worm is one of the things that she can contribute, so we kind of planned it out before the game. Thankfully we got the goal so that we could actually display it."

Solo could probably pick any dance she wanted, having appeared on "Dancing With the Stars" last year. Wambach said the celebration was a late birthday present for the goalkeeper, who turned 31 on Monday, but it also served to reinforce team camaraderie after Solo's recent Twitter rant that prompted a meeting with the coach and captains.

"I think that Hope prefers the wins and the shutouts as birthday presents," Wambach said. "But it was great to get her involved because it makes us feel what the game is about. It's about fun. It's about laughing and enjoying it out there ? because how often are you going to say you played at Old Trafford and scored a goal?"

Old Trafford had hosted only domestic women's games previously. The last one was an FA Cup final in 1989 that drew less than 1,000 fans.

"You think of the great players that have played out there before us, and the goals that have been scored," defender Amy LePeilbet said. "It's one of the highlights of my career."

North Korea finished with a 1-2 record in the group and still had a chance to advance, depending on the results of Tuesday's other games. The team completed the game with 10 players after Choe Mi Gyong was sent off with a second yellow card in the 81st minute following a tackle on Lauren Cheney.

The North Koreans are ranked in the top 10 in the world, but they remain an unknown in women's soccer because their players and officials have limited interaction with other teams. They sent a very young squad to these Olympics: Their average age of 19 years, 11 months made them look like a junior club next to the Americans, who checked in at 28 years, 1 month.

"Our team is made up of very young players, so there is nobody who can blame them for not doing well," coach Sin Ui Gun said through an interpreter. "This time it was a great experience for them."

With a place in the next round assured, U.S. coach Pia Sundhage had her players take it easy in the second half, slowing the pace of play to keep the legs fresh for the quarterfinals. North Korea nearly capitalized with a tying goal, producing several scoring threats in a three-minute stretch that forced Solo to the ground twice.

"There were times when we could have possessed the ball better," Sundhage said. "We were a little bit naive, naive in the middle. I can see the players want to do some great things out there ? it is the Olympics ? but sometimes we could have been a little bit smarter and kept the ball."

Mostly, however, Solo had plenty of downtime to think about her next series of tweets. She ruffled feathers after the last game by using Twitter to criticize NBC analyst and former U.S. player Brandi Chastain's commentary. Despite the meeting with the coach, Solo didn't back down her comments and said Tuesday the team wasn't affected by any distractions.

"Do you see the way our team is performing?" Solo said. "We're having fun. We're scoring goals. We swept our group. I don't think there's any distractions."

The goal came on a play set up by Cheney's long ball to Alex Morgan, who slid a pass between two defenders to Wambach for an easy tap-in and her third goal of the tournament. Morgan and Wambach both hit the right post in the first half, part of a series of near-misses that kept the score close.

"Even though some of us played 90 minutes, it was definitely a restful game for a lot of us, which is the most important thing," Wambach said. "Because we need fresh legs going in the quarterfinals, which is where the fun begins. You lose and you go home."

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Three decades ago, Kate Lundsten made quite an imprint on the swimming community. The Minnetonka grad was a key member of the Piper swim team that won three consecutive AIAW national titles (the predecessor to NCAA Division III). She led by example, earning 24 All-American notations. By the time she was done in 1982, she had won national titles in the 100 and 200 yard backstroke, setting a national record in the latter event. Her times in those events (as well as being a member of the 200 Free Relay) have stood the test of time and are still school standards today.

After her competitive days ended, Lundsten turned to coaching with great success at Eden Prairie High School and with the Aquajets Swim Team. One of her top current proteges is Rachel Bootsma, the Eden Prairie, Minn. teenager who will be one of the top American prospects when the Summer Olympics get under way this week in London. Like her teacher/coach did, Bootsma competes in the 100 backstroke. She was second at the U.S. trials, duplicating her 2011 finish. She will also be a member of the 4x100 medley relay team.

Bootsma's time of 59.49 in the 100 Backstroke was less than a second behind Missy Franklin's winning time. Bootsma has no problem giving credit to her mentor. On her USA SWIMMING bio, she says this about Lundsten: "Without her coaching me, I certainly wouldn?t be swimming. She keeps practices fun and enjoyable. She knows me so well. She helped me set my goal to make the Olympic team and she was the one who helped me make that goal a reality. I owe all of my swimming successes to her.?

Bootsma hits the water at the Aquatic Centre Sunday, July 29 for the first round. If all goes well, she will be back for a semifinal bid later that day. The finals are scheduled for Monday, July 30.

Supervalu fires CEO Herkert, names Sales to post

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) ? Supervalu is ousting CEO Craig Herkert as the grocery chain looks to right its business only weeks after reporting disappointing quarterly results and suggesting it might put itself up for sale.

Chairman Wayne Sales was named Monday to take on the additional roles of president and CEO.

Supervalu had brought in Herkert, a former Wal-Mart Stores Inc. executive, in 2009 to help shake things up. The grocer subsequently put a heavier emphasis on lower prices and tried to position itself as a neighborhood store to draw new shoppers and keep customers.

Earlier this month, the Minneapolis company reported that both its first-quarter net income and revenue slid and it suspended its dividend.

Supervalu was still feeling the pressure from competitors and the company announced that it would cut prices further. The grocer also said earlier this month that it planned to trim its administrative and operational expenses over the next two years and cut its capital spending.

The company had said it and and its financial advisers will review various options. While the supermarket operator did not elaborate, this type of review traditionally includes the possibility of selling the company.

Sales, 62, has been a board member since 2006. He is the retired vice chairman of Canadian Tire Corp. and was its president and CEO from 2000 to 2006. Sales previously served in various roles at Kmart Corp.'s U.S. division.

The cost savings efforts, coupled with a focus on improving its financials and becoming more competitive, appear to be tops on Sales' agenda.

"We will take significant cost out of the business, and move with urgency in our retail food business to lower prices and create points of sustainable differentiation for our customers," Sales said in a statement.

He added that Supervalu is still reviewing its strategic options and that he will continue to lead that process.

Supervalu also named board member Philip Francis, 65, as lead director on Monday.

Sales plans to retire from his board posts at Georgia Gulf Corp. and aviation company Discovery Air Inc. so that he can concentrate on his roles at Supervalu.

Supervalu's shares fell 3 cents to $1.96 in morning trading.

The company has about 4,400 stores in the U.S.

These modified BFEs, together with the floodplain management criteria required by 44 CFR 60.3, are the minimum that are required. They should not be construed to mean that the community must change any existing ordinances that are more stringent in their floodplain management requirements. The community may at any time enact stricter requirements of its own or pursuant to policies established by other Federal, State, or regional entities. The changes in BFEs are in accordance with 44 CFR 65.4.

National Environmental Policy Act. This interim rule is categorically excluded from the requirements of 44 CFR part 10, Environmental Consideration. An environmental impact assessment has not been prepared.

Regulatory Flexibility Act. As flood elevation determinations are not within the scope of the Regulatory Flexibility Act, 5 U.S.C. 601-612, a regulatory flexibility analysis is not required.

Regulatory Classification. This interim rule is not a significant regulatory action under the criteria of section 3(f) of Executive Order 12866 of September 30, 1993, Regulatory Planning and Review, 58 FR 51735.

Executive Order 13132, Federalism. This interim rule involves no policies that have federalism implications under Executive Order 13132, Federalism.

Executive Order 12988, Civil Justice Reform. This interim rule meets the applicable standards of Executive Order 12988.

Visitors to the site on Thursday had been greeted with a half-formed message saying that "Twitter is currently down." The fields where a reason for the outage and a deadline for restoring service were apparently meant to go were filled with computer code.

Sluggishness or outages were reported for more than an hour in countries in the Americas, Europe, Asia, and Africa. Some users were able to post updates through their phones or third-party applications. Tweets about the Olympic torch, which is wending its way through central London, still poured in, albeit far more slowly than earlier in the day.

Mike Lizun of Swedish performance monitoring company Apica said the outage appeared at 11:23 a.m. EDT (1523 GMT). He said Twitter was "completely down" for about 40 minutes before briefly recovering and becoming unavailable again at roughly 12:15 p.m. EDT (1615 GMT).

While the site was affected, many self-proclaimed "Twitter refugees" had flooded Facebook with complaints about Twitter. As usual following outages, "WhileTwitterWasDown" was one of the most-talked about topics on Twitter in the United States. Users cracked jokes about their regained productivity as a result of the downtime ? or going outside to get some sunshine.

The issues were resolved five hours later.

Especially in larger companies, fragmented planning efforts prevent companies from achieving these goals. They miss opportunities to sell more, incorrectly allocate their resources to less productive or less profitable activities and react too slowly to changing market conditions.

Our research?finds that the closest most companies get to doing integrated business planning is their budget, which is in itself a financial plan, but a poor substitute for true IBP. Financial plans are too focused on finance and control issues and do not adequately incorporate operational aspects of the business.

The first step toward integrating business planning is understanding the fundamental difference between budgeting and planning. While people tend to use the terms interchangeably, budgeting and planning are different things. Budgeting is financial planning ? it?s about creating a statement of financial administration for a period of time based on what an organization expects to spend and how it expects to finance those expenditures, either from internal cash sources or external ones. Planning is about creating a detailed program of action consistent with strategy and objectives. Budgeting is about money. Planning is about things ? units sold, headcount required, less-than-truckload shipments and so on. Budgeting sets limits; planning figures out what?s possible. Philosophically, there are subtle but vital differences between the two: Budgeting is about not failing; planning is about succeeding. Budgeting is about establishing a fixed number; planning is about understanding a range of possibilities. Today, budgets almost always are derived from operational plans. A better approach is to have the operational plans drive the budget more directly.

The second step toward IBP is creating a central store of all necessary planning data. While a company?s budget may be reachable, it?s rare to find a usefully complete set of data related to operational plans available in a workable format and in an accessible data store. Typically the data resides in desktop spreadsheets scattered across file servers and individual computers. In some cases, the information may be in one or more enterprise applications, such as sales forecasts in a sales automation system or financial forecasts in a dedicated planning application. Manually pulling together these individual strands on a regular basis is too time-consuming, especially if this integration is done in a desktop spreadsheet. Businesses need a central data store of the most up-to-date information that includes actual and planned amounts presented in a way that everyone can understand. That way, when people in one part of the organization pull together a plan, they can access the outlook of another part of the business that may have an impact on their projections. Note that ?usefully complete? does not necessarily mean exhaustive; each business must decide on an optimal level of detail.

Having a central store of all planning data requires information technology: hardware, software and the ability to extract and move data to the store. Fortunately, most large and many midsize companies already have these assets available; they should not require any incremental capital investment to create such a data store.

Ideally the software for managing the planning process would be a dedicated planning application. It should not involve standalone spreadsheets, because of the difficulties these sorts of spreadsheets pose when people try to aggregate data from them. Most planning applications enable people to use a spreadsheet interface, which means that employees need little or no training to work on individual plans because they are using familiar-looking software. Alternatively, a company could elect to simply gather data from various business units using a server-based spreadsheet such as Microsoft Excel Server. This approach gives individuals the ease of use they expect but with a real database back end in which the data can be stored, aggregated, queried and reported on faster, more flexibly and more accurately.

These are the first two steps toward what should be the ultimate goal: an integrated, driver-based business model?that enables a company to rapidly update its business plan on a regular basis and automatically generate the financial plan (income statement, balance sheet and cash flow) consistent with this outlook. These financial plans would not necessarily replace the annual budget as a control or governance device, but would provide executives in and out of the finance organization with a clearer view of the financial implications of the current set of plans.

Corporations worldwide have had to contend with high levels of volatility in commodity prices, demand, supply chains and currency, among other things, over the past five years. The reverberations of the financial crisis are likely to persist for years to come, so business conditions will remain turbulent. Integrated business planning can provide companies with the ability to react to change faster, and with greater coordination and effectiveness. Taking the first steps to adopting this approach does not have to be expensive, and it can be cost-effective. It can enable better coordination and collaboration across an organization because of the greater transparency into future plans and assumptions. Companies need to adopt integrated business planning to make it easier to cope with volatility.

Intel confirms it's working on Jelly Bean for Atom chips

In not particularly surprising, yet reassuring news, Intel has confirmed that they are indeed working on a port of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean for use on their Atom chips. While we're still waiting for Intel to really make headway in the Android space, working on Jelly Bean reaffirms that they're here for the long haul. 

There was no timeframe provided, and we still haven't seen a timeframe for Ice Cream Sandwich either, but the following statement from a company spokesman confirmed the news. 

Intel continues to work closely with Google to enable future versions of Android, including Jelly Bean, on our family of low power Atom processors

Currently, Intel devices are being pushed out carrying Android 2.3 Gingerbread -- such as the Orange San Diego -- which works superbly, but is still hideously outdated at this point in time. We're still waiting to see the partnership with Motorola take off, and even Vizio is supposed to be using Intel architecture in a forthcoming 10-inch tablet. Hopefully these two companies will at least launch with ICS on board -- else face a monstrous failure -- but to see that Intel is working towards catching up remains positive.

Twitter confirms site issues, working to resolve things (update: Twitter apologizes and explains)

It's a rough day for internet communication. First Google Talk, now Twitter. The microblogging service confirmed that it's currently having some issues -- a fact independently verified by our frustrated staff -- adding that "Our engineers are currently working to resolve the issue." We'll let you know when you can safely return to your regularly scheduled tweeting.

Update: Everything seems to be back to normal. You know what to do.

Update 2: Twitter just posted an apology and explanation for the outage on its blog. Turns out, tweets weren't making their way to the web because both a primary and back-up system in Twitter's data centers failed simultaneously, leaving us bereft of 140-character nuggets of wisdom for about two hours. Rest assured, VP of Engineering Mazen Rawashdeh and his team have apologized for the inconvenience and are working to prevent the problem in the future.
