Smartphone Sex Toys Make Long Distance Relationships More ...

Posted: September 30, 2012

In a long distance relationship? Sad that you can?t get up close and personal with the person you love on a regular basis? A new smartphone sex toy is setting out correct that problem. According to Oh Gizmo, the LovePalz toys are specifically designed to work with Bluetooth technology, meaning the devices are essentially hands-free. The next time you decide to engage in some face time with your significant other on the other side of the planet, perhaps it?s time to insert some technology into your love life, so to speak.

Although the gadgets can be used individually, the real allure of this smartphone sex toy is the ability to use the devices at the same time. Here?s how it works: The female LovePalz participant takes her side of the device, dubbed ?Hera,? and inserts the contraption into an opening of her pleasure. The guy, meanwhile, places his corresponding body part inside ?Zeus,? the yin to ?Hera?s? yang. Once a proper rhythm has been found, technologically-enhanced pleasure is sure to follow.

?When I was studying abroad, my girlfriend and I were apart and had a long-distance relationship, sex wasn?t something we could achieve,? creator Oni Chen explained to ABC News. ?So I thought, why can?t we have something that can help us spike up our relationship when we are not around each other??

All you need to enjoy your own LovePalz experience are the devices, a smartphone, and the corresponding app, the latter of which comes with its very own video conferencing software. After all, what?s the point of getting busy in the modern age if you can?t look at your partner on a digital screen?

?It doesn?t really work, if you don?t see each other,? Chen said of the smartphone sex toy. ?The concept is to stimulate virtual sex ? to feel as real as possible.?

Although you can currently place orders for the LovePalz, Chen readily admits the contraptions have yet to be manufactured and the app hasn?t been approved for inclusion in the Apple Store. In other words, it may be a while before your long distance relationship receives the electronic stimulation you desire.

Would you engage in a little Bluetooh hanky panky with your significant other using this smartphone sex toy?

Practices That Receive Good Results In Forum Marketing ? Indie ...

There are a number of major internet marketing forums on the net, as many of you might be mindful. There are very real do?s and don?ts when it comes to efficient promoting on any kind of forum. Incidentally, this does not apply to just doing internet business on marketing forums as there are many thousands on non-marketing related forums online. There?s a small assortment of general suggestions you can follow that will allow you to experience positive effects on any forum. You can get far simply by exhibiting good conduct and making others view you in a positive way. But nonetheless you are definitely expected to be yourself, even so if you want to effectively market anything on a forum you must avoid being negative, all round.

We need not look for further examples than Kindle Ritual reviews. When you first make your new forum account, then what you need to do is take time to get a feel for the place without jumping immediately into the fire ? except when you want to. So you will simply avoid a lot of, if any, debate and look at the overall activity and acquire a feel for the dynamics. Unsurprisingly, all forums contain a part of the people who started them, and then that also is accurate for the bulk of people in the forum. If you think you will arrive and inflict a new set of rules on a forum, then you will be in for a rude and very quick lesson in forum manners, rules and culture. You should find out what the general cues are in any online community, and we mean the nuances that exist and are quite real.

One typically really bad idea is to instantly begin advertising whatever it is you are promoting. Do find out if you can indulge in any kind of marketing promotions, and if not then just move on as there is no motive to stay. There is purely no way to market anything, and spamming by private emails will in all probability get you restricted in a very short time.

Eventually you have to become known, and the very best way to do that is to basically supply helpful information. Community forums can be ruthless places, and if your knowledge is incorrect in some major way, then it can get awkward and your standing could be ruined. So simply help people as much as practical and in an ideal amount.

Investing & Trading Rules, Aphorisms & Books (Fall 2012) | The Big ...

Back in 2011, I pulled together a full run of Trading Rules & Aphorisms.

It turned out to be a worthwhile exercise, and so I began updating this semi annually. This is a list of my favorite traders, analysts, economists and investors views? on what to do ? and what not to do ? when it comes to markets.

This is the latest?updated version of my:

Trading & Investing Rules, Aphorisms & Books

? Livermores Seven Trading Lessons

? Bob Farrell?s 10 Rules for Investing

? James Montier?s Seven Immutable Laws of Investing

? Richard Rhodes? 12 Trading Rules

? John Murphy?s Ten Laws of Technical Trading

? Six Rules of Michael Steinhardt

??David Merkel: The Eight Rules of My Investing

? Art Huprich?s Market Truisms and Axioms

? DENNIS GARTMAN?S NOT-SO-SIMPLE RULES OF TRADING

? Lessons from Merrill Lynch

? Louis Ehrenkrantz? 7 Golden Rules for Investing

? Rosie?s Rules to Remember

? In Defense of the ?Old Always? (Montier)

? Lessons Learned from 37 Years of Futures Trading

? Richard Russell?s The Power of Compounding

? The golden rules of investing (India)

? 25 Common Sense Money Tips

?

If you have any suggestions for any good lists of rules I may have missed, please link to them in comments. If they are worthy, they will get added tot he list.

After this run, I plan on updating this list 2x per year . . .

?

My own trading rules and favorite Trading Books are after the jump

My (Ritholtz) own rules

? 10 Errors and Checklist for Investors

? Rules for Shorting

? 15 Inviolable Rules for Dealing with Wall Street

? 10 Psychological, Valuation, Adapative Investing Rules

? The Zen of Trading

?

Then go to these books ? they cover trading and markets generally:

Jack D. Schwager: Stock Market Wizards : Interviews with America's Top Stock Traders? Stock Market Wizards : Interviews with America?s Top Stock Traders by Jack D. Schwager

Schwager interviewed market legends at the height of their success. What makes the book so worthwhile are the consistent themes that evolve from currency traders, mutual fund managers, commodities traders, hedge fund managers. Regardless of what is being traded, there are related motifs that run throughout.

What results is not a ?How to trade? book; instead, it is a book about ?How to think about trading.?

Charles D. Ellis: The Investor's Anthology: Original Ideas from the Industry's Greatest Minds? The Investor?s Anthology: Original Ideas from the Industry?s Greatest Minds by Charles D. Ellis

Instead of interviewing famed investors, Ellis gathered their best writings into one collection. He ends up with a series of short chapters by luminaries of days gone by. There is something worthwhile on just about every page. This is another favorite worth rereading every few years.

Maggie Mahar: Bull: A History of the Boom and Bust, 1982-2004? Bull: A History of the Boom and Bust, 1982-2004, What drove the Breakneck Market ? and What Every Investor Needs to Know About Financial Cycles by Maggie Mahar

The best book about the 1982-2000 market, bar none. There are a surprising number of lessons buried in these pages that will reward the careful reader. I found it both fascinating and informative.

Richard D. Wyckoff: How I Trade and Invest in Stocks and Bonds (Contrary Opinion Library)

? How I Trade and Invest in Stocks and Bonds by Richard Wycoff

Quite simply, this is one of my favorite books on the markets and investing. The fact that it is from 1923 is totally irrelevant.

Another good book is When to Sell by Justin Mamis. Published in 1970s, it is filled with good observations about developing a sell strategy.

If you want some book ideas for Technicals, have a go at these:

? Technical Analysis of the Financial Markets by John J. Murphy.
? Technical Analysis from A to Z by Steven B. Achelis;
? Encyclopedia of Chart Patterns by Thomas N. Bulkowski;
? Japanese Candlestick Charting Techniques by Steve Nison;

Don?t think you need a full reference library; any pair of these books should do.

Last, there are a full run of books here:

Yorktown's Jessica Calamera Ready to Make it Big in the Music ...

She fell in?love with music when she was just a little girl. Now all grown up at 22, Jessica Calamera, of Yorktown, is getting ready to make a splash into the music industry and make it big.?

The 2008?Lakeland High School graduate has been surrounded by music her whole life ? both of her parents are musicians and performers ? and music has always been prominent in every aspect of her everyday life.

"My parents have videos of me performing and writing songs as early as two years old so I guess I just kind of always knew this was what I was meant to do," Calamera said.?

The pop/country singer and songwriter will be filming and recording her first television concert special and debut album, titled "This Much Fun," completely live at the historic Winery at St. George in Mohegan Lake on Tuesday, Oct. 2, with a special show for the press and industry on Oct. 1.?

She will?lead a band of some of the country?s finest musicians through the recording and filming of 12 new songs.

The tracks on the album range from sassy rock and roll and blues, driving in your car sing-alongs to beautiful heartfelt ballads, she said.?

No stranger to the spotlight, Calamera's music has been featured in television and film and there are a few music?videos.?You can also hear some of her songs, by clicking here. She said she was excited to be filming her first concert special live, but she was not nervous because she feels she and her band are ready.

"I am so confident in the amazing band that we have put together, and I know they will give an incredible performance," Calamera said. "They are some of the finest musicians and people I have ever met and I feel so blessed to be sharing a stage with them. I just can?t wait for everyone to hear all of the new songs and see the show."

A few years ago, the woman was featured in her composer father?s own nationwide PBS television special, "Cal?Forever and Beyond." Calamera's heart wrenching ballad, ?Favorite Stranger,? which details a couple?s struggle with Alzheimer?s disease became a high point of the show.

"My dad has always been my number one fan and has been right beside me working every step of the way through all of the ups and downs I've experienced throughout my career so far," she said. "I really owe everything to him because of how much he has always believed in me and encouraged me to reach for the stars."

Calamera?writes all of her own music and songwriting has always been an outlet for her, she said.

"The inspiration for my songs comes from my real life," the musician said. "When people hear my music, they are hearing my diary. I have an interesting story to go along with each and every song I have ever written and I hope that people can relate and connect to the music and the things that I write about being that I?m sure they have gone through them too at some point."

Calamera said through her music she hopes to?make a difference in someone?s life through her own stories and life experiences, or even just simply bring a smile to someone's face on a rough day while they sing along to her songs.

The young woman's has always taken music seriously ? she began?taking piano lessons in elementary school, later learning the guitar and drums.?

But it wasn't a year and a half ago that she knew she had to make what she calls an important life decision ? she decided to pursue a solo career and leave the pop/rock band she had formed when she was just 14 years old.

"It was becoming clearer to me as I hit this crossroad in my life, coming near to the end of college and really being faced with the challenges of growing up, that I knew what I had to do," she said.

If she really wanted to make it, she had to go after her dreams.

"That is when I returned to my love of country music, wrote a whole batch of new songs in this genre?and started to form the incredible 13-piece band that will play beside me at my showcases at The Winery at Saint George on Oct. 1 and 2," Calamera said.

Tickets for the filming at the Winery are sold out, but Calamera and her band will be making their way around the New York area in a series of local concerts as the film and CD are prepared for their official release dates around the holidays.?

"My dreams and goals for my music career are to make a living touring, performing and doing what I love to do while making a difference in the lives of many," Calamera said.?

Calamera has a Bachelor's degree from Pace University in math and adolescent education, and she is currently working on her Master's in special education at Pace University.

Simulations uncover 'flashy' secrets of merging black holes

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? According to Einstein, whenever massive objects interact, they produce gravitational waves -- distortions in the very fabric of space and time -- that ripple outward across the universe at the speed of light. While astronomers have found indirect evidence of these disturbances, the waves have so far eluded direct detection. Ground-based observatories designed to find them are on the verge of achieving greater sensitivities, and many scientists think that this discovery is just a few years away.

Catching gravitational waves from some of the strongest sources -- colliding black holes with millions of times the sun's mass -- will take a little longer. These waves undulate so slowly that they won't be detectable by ground-based facilities. Instead, scientists will need much larger space-based instruments, such as the proposed Laser Interferometer Space Antenna, which was endorsed as a high-priority future project by the astronomical community.

A team that includes astrophysicists at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., is looking forward to that day by using computational models to explore the mergers of supersized black holes. Their most recent work investigates what kind of "flash" might be seen by telescopes when astronomers ultimately find gravitational signals from such an event.

Studying gravitational waves will give astrophysicists an unprecedented opportunity to witness the universe's most extreme phenomena, leading to new insights into the fundamental laws of physics, the death of stars, the birth of black holes and, perhaps, the earliest moments of the universe.

A black hole is an object so massive that nothing, not even light, can escape its gravitational grip. Most big galaxies, including our own Milky Way, contain a central black hole weighing millions of times the sun's mass, and when two galaxies collide, their monster black holes settle into a close binary system.

"The black holes orbit each other and lose orbital energy by emitting strong gravitational waves, and this causes their orbits to shrink. The black holes spiral toward each other and eventually merge," said Goddard astrophysicist John Baker.

Close to these titanic, rapidly moving masses, space and time become repeatedly flexed and warped. Just as a disturbance forms ripples on the surface of a pond, drives seismic waves through Earth, or puts the jiggle in a bowl of Jell-O, the cyclic flexing of space-time near binary black holes produces waves of distortion that race across the universe.

While gravitational waves promise to tell astronomers many things about the bodies that created them, they cannot provide one crucial piece of information -- the precise position of the source. So to really understand a merger event, researchers need an accompanying electromagnetic signal -- a flash of light, ranging from radio waves to X-rays -- that will allow telescopes to pinpoint the merger's host galaxy.

Understanding the electromagnetic counterparts that may accompany a merger involves the daunting task of tracking the complex interactions between the black holes, which can be moving at more than half the speed of light in the last few orbits, and the disks of hot, magnetized gas that surround them. Since 2010, numerous studies using simplifying assumptions have found that mergers could produce a burst of light, but no one knew how commonly this occurred or whether the emission would be strong enough to be detectable from Earth.

To explore the problem in greater detail, a team led by Bruno Giacomazzo at the University of Colorado, Boulder, and including Baker developed computer simulations that for the first time show what happens in the magnetized gas (also called a plasma) in the last stages of a black hole merger. Their study was published in the June 10 edition of The Astrophysical Journal Letters.

The simulations follow the complex electrical and magnetic interactions in the ionized gas -- known as magnetohydrodynamics -- within the extreme gravitational environment determined by the equations of Einstein's general relativity, a task requiring the use of advanced numerical codes and fast supercomputers.

Both of the simulations reported in the study were run on the Pleiades supercomputer at NASA's Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, Calif. They follow the black holes over their last three orbits and subsequent merger using models both with and without a magnetic field in the gas disk.

Additional simulations were run on the Ranger and Discover supercomputers, respectively located at the University of Texas, Austin, and the NASA Center for Climate Simulations at Goddard, in order to investigate the effects of different initial conditions, fewer orbits and other variations.

"What's striking in the magnetic simulation is that the disk's initial magnetic field is rapidly intensified by about 100 times, and the merged black hole is surrounded by a hotter, denser, thinner accretion disk than in the unmagnetized case," Giacomazzo explained.

In the turbulent environment near the merging black holes, the magnetic field intensifies as it becomes twisted and compressed. The team suggests that running the simulation for additional orbits would result in even greater amplification.

The most interesting outcome of the magnetic simulation is the development of a funnel-like structure -- a cleared-out zone that extends up out of the accretion disk near the merged black hole. "This is exactly the type of structure needed to drive the particle jets we see from the centers of black-hole-powered active galaxies," Giacomazzo said.

The most important aspect of the study is the brightness of the merger's flash. The team finds that the magnetic model produces beamed emission that is some 10,000 times brighter than those seen in previous studies, which took the simplifying step of ignoring plasma effects in the merging disks.

"We need gravitational waves to confirm that a black hole merger has occurred, but if we can understand the electromagnetic signatures from mergers well enough, perhaps we can search for candidate events even before we have a space-based gravitational wave observatory," Baker said.

IBM CEO Virginia Rometty takes on chairman title

(AP) ? IBM President and CEO Virginia Rometty is taking on the added role of chairman, as Samuel Palmisano prepares to retire at the end of this year.

The technology company said Tuesday that Rometty, 55, will take on the expanded role Oct. 1. Palmisano, 61, will serve as a senior adviser until he retires in December.

Rometty, the company's former sales and marketing chief, became IBM Corp.'s first female CEO in January. Joining the Armonk, N.Y.-based company in 1981 as an engineer, Rometty later was instrumental in the formation of IBM's business services division, including overseeing the $3.5 billion purchase of PricewaterhouseCoopers' consulting business in 2002.

IBM has sustained a nearly decade-long streak of earnings growth as it shook off the economic jitters that have undercut several other technology companies.

LG Optimus Vu II specs leak out: double the RAM of the original, few other changes

DNP Optimus Vu II

Having put the phat back in phablet with its original 4:3 aspect ratio, 5-inch Optimus Vu, LG seems bent on releasing a successor already, the Optimus Vu II, according to a leak from Korean blog Bad IT Tong. The new Galaxy Note II challenger would carry the same form factor and 1080 x 768 IPS screen as the current Vu model, while doubling the RAM to 2GB, bumping the Qualcomm processor to an 8960 1.5GHz dual-core model (not the international quad-core version) and keeping the LTE radio from its US Intuition variant. It would come out of the box with Android 4.0, an 8-megapixel rear shooter, 32GB of storage and a 2080 mAh battery, judging by the leaked image above -- all specs we've seen before. 'DWTS: All-Stars' Premieres -- and Competition Is Fierce!

Fourteen seasons in, an all-star version of Dancing With the Stars was just what the doctor ordered. Monday night's Season 14 premiere featured the usual sparkly garb, fun music and wise cracks from its panel of eccentric judges. But it also offered a parade of past contestants with a proven ability to generate buzz—whether by dancing well or some other means.

Mobile Text Messaging Technology Could Play A Vital Role In ...

Did you know that more than 2 million patients die every year of skin cancer in the United States alone? And, unless you have been hiding under a rock, you must have already felt the effects of global warming and also come across newspaper reports that in 90% of the cases, it is the big bad sun that is to be blamed for skin cancer. So, it goes without mention that every little fruitful effort to reduce the risk of skin cancer in the country counts. Now, what exactly has Mobile text messaging technology got to do with skin cancer?

Well, recently the center for connected health conducted a nationwide study to find out how effective mobile text messaging technology was in increasing awareness about the causative factors of skin cancer and also how sunscreen could protect your skin. It was found that mobile text messaging technology was more effective in reminding people about sunscreen use compared to reminders sent over e-mails and the recall value of print and television advertisements. The Center for connected health found out that mobile text messaging technology was a very low-cost and innovative way of staying connected with hundreds and thousands of cell phone users across the country and this technology could be possibly used even for larger scale health issues. The organization also found out that text messaging was more capable of influencing people into visiting their dermatologists more regularly and calculations by experts revealed that just mobile text messaging technology alone was capable of reducing skin cancer in the country by at least 35%. Now, that is something you cannot ignore. Neither could be mass communication experts ignore the figures.

After a little bit of number crunching it was found that 85% of cell phone users cannot ignore text message on their cell phones. A strange psychology works here ? more than half of all cell phone users in the country wouldn?t mind disconnecting and unwanted call from an unknown number and maybe even the extent of blacklisting it, but when it comes to messages, almost all cell phone users cannot resist the urge to find out what?s written in there. That makes mobile text messaging technology one of the most effective communication technologies ? sometimes it is even better than e-mail.

Experts believe that by using mobile text messaging technology, different government and nongovernment organizations will be able to reach out to a wider section of the demography and create awareness about killer diseases. However, just like any other scientific marvel, mobile text messaging technology also has its own set of disadvantages. According to the recent rules laid down by the United States government, all text messages, especially those that are sent by healthcare organizations and medical professionals need to be HIPPA compliant. This act has been put in place to make sure that the privacy and security of the patients do not get compromised under any circumstance. There have been instances when cell phones got stolen or misplaced and ended up in the wrong hands where they were hacked into and personal information of patients, especially celebrities, were extracted and publicized without the consent of the patient himself. So, the healthcare organizations just need to make sure that all text messages are HIPPA compliant.

Author: This is guest post by Kimber, a technology writer who researches and writes for Hippomsg.com, a private texting app for physicians which is compliant to HIPPA regulations.

James Swanson MFS: What the equity risk premium is telling us

There are several ways investors look at stocks to assess their relative value. Many look to the stock market?s price-to-earnings or P/E ratio; others flip that ratio to look at the market?s earnings? yield. I think the more compelling measure, however, is one that shows how stock yields compare with bond yields. The difference between these two yields is the equity risk premium.

This premium is one of the best indicators I have found to determine whether investing in stocks is a better option than putting money into bonds. It represents the extra return that investors demand for investing their money in a risky versus a low risk asset. The premium, now at 4.5%, is extremely high, suggesting that stocks are a better value than bonds.

We can take this all to mean that stocks are cheap or bonds are expensive. If we assume that the equity risk premium is going to revert to its historical average, or normal, it is typically assumed that one of the following three things might happen:

  1. Bond yields could rise. Such a rise would mean an immediate drop in bond prices. This could be a shocker if investors are still long bonds when this happens. Typically interest rates rise when there is strong growth in the economy or when inflation is accelerating. Neither of these conditions is present at this time.
  2. Earnings could fall. This usually happens in recessions or during big slowdowns in the economy. Typically in a recession, the stock market drops if earnings are falling.
  3. Stock prices could fall. If stock prices were to fall as much as earnings, the ratio might stay the same. The two are related.
While the above outcomes are possible, I foresee a fourth result. I expect that US economic growth will continue and that US corporate earnings will keep rising, albeit at a slower pace. In turn, real interest rates will rise. These conditions would put a foundation in place for stocks to outperform.

No forecasts can be guaranteed.

Simply Irresistible: Scientists Trace Gluttony's Path in the Brain

Stimulating a brain region induces intense overeating

Image: Current Biology, DiFeliceantonio et al.: "Enkephalin surges in dorsal neostriatum as a signal to eat."

How much is too much chocolate? Desperately devouring 5 percent of one's body weight might sound extreme, but scientists tinkering with the brain chemistry of rodents have found it's certainly possible.

Scientists at the University of Michigan (U.M.) have identified how a brain region plays a role in our pursuit of sweet temptations. As they describe in the September 20 issue of Current Biology, a surge of chemical compounds resembling opium in this area can trigger the impulse to gorge on a treat without restraint.

The region in question is the neostriatum. In humans this area is split into two parts, behind the eyes and below the folds of the cortex near the front of the head. It's just above the brain's well-studied reward circuitry, which includes the ventral striatum and nucleus accumbens. Traditionally, the neostriatum has been studied in movement and habitual motor behaviors. Although no previous research had found a clear causal link between the region and motivation to eat, some human studies with functional magnetic resonance imaging have suggested that the neostriatum is active when an overweight subject looks at food or an addict views a drug of choice.

To investigate the brain region further, the researchers studied changes in the neostriatum chemistry of lab rats when at rest, hungry, offered food, feeding and after eating. The proffered food was chocolate, specifically M&Ms. Author and biopsychologist Alexandra DiFeliceantonio at U.M. says, "Chocolate offers sweetness and fattiness?the perfect storm of a stimulus to get the effect we wanted."

Using a catheter, the researchers sampled fluid from the neostriatum during these stages to discern neurotransmitter activity. They observed a pronounced spike in one neurotransmitter in particular?enkephalin?when rats began feeding. Enkephalin, like the neurotransmitter endorphin, is an opioid that sends out pleasurable signals. The scientists observed that the stronger the enkephalin rise, the faster the rats raced to eat M&Ms.

Eventually?after having wolfed down about 10 M&Ms each in 20 minutes?normal rats became sated and ceased eating. With this change, the enkephalin rush abated while other circuitry presumably kicked in to tell the brain to stop the compulsion.

In the hopes of finding a directional link between the neostriatum's opioid receptors and feasting, the researchers injected an artificial opioid straight into the neostriatum. When they proffered the rats M&Ms, a feeding frenzy began again, but this time most of the animals gobbled more than 17 of the candies each. Given their slight sizes, this is comparable to a 68-kilogram human eating three kilograms of chocolate within an hour.

The ravenous episode was so intense that the rats showed no signs of stopping and had to be forcibly removed from the feast. In addition, opioid-injected rats gobbled chocolate faster, as though the drugged subjects were more desperate to begin with. Opioid injections to neighboring brain regions, or injections with other chemicals, produced a much weaker response. This led the researchers to believe that the neostriatum's opioid receptors activate an intense motivational system, driving the rats to pursue rewards.

In a final test, the researchers decided to evaluate whether the neostriatum's neurotransmitter spike actually enhanced the way rats were attracted to their food?somehow magnifying the experience of a rich, chocolatey taste. To do this, they offered rats injected with or without the opioid a taste of chocolate or sweet oral infusion. They then measured how much a rat liked the taste by counting lip-licking, a common behavioral test of taste preference in babies and nonhuman primates. They found that the opioid-dosed rats did not appear particularly enthused about chocolate's sweet flavor?they did not lick their lips more when exposed to a sweet after the injection. The researchers concluded that their overindulgence was based purely on compulsion and not the candy's intensified deliciousness.

The finding suggests that flooding the neostriatum's receptors with opioids?natural or not?can drive extreme overeating. The region's proximity to the brain's pleasure network means the work can have implications for other enjoyable activities and vices. "These areas work together in concert and create these seas of wanting in the brain," DiFeliceantonio says.

"This study is adding another piece to the puzzle of how the reward system works," says neuroscientist Gary Wenk at The Ohio State University. Wenk, who was not involved in the study, explains that evolutionary reasons can help us understand why our brain pushes us to overeat: "We evolved so that when we found food, we would eat as much as we could." Not only would this ensure that we received necessary nutrients, it kept competitors from stealing our meals?we'd leave nothing for them to take. The brain helps by activating the opiate system as a euphoric reward, counteracting the discomfort of a swelling waist and encouraging us to have one more bite.

Brewers beat Pirates, stay in wild-card hunt

PITTSBURGH (AP) - John Axford looked to his left and the St. Louis Cardinals-Houston Astros game was on one clubhouse television. He looked to another TV on his right and saw the Los Angeles Dodgers playing the Washington Nationals.

The Milwaukee Brewers closer smiled.

"We're not scoreboard watching," Axford said. "Not at all."

Axford was fibbing, of course.

Marco Estrada pitched seven scoreless innings and rookie shortstop Jean Segura hit a double and triple Wednesday night as the surging Brewers stayed in contention for a postseason berth with a 3-1 victory over the fading Pittsburgh Pirates.

Estrada (4-6) allowed three hits and retired the last 10 batters he faced in improving to 4-1 with a 1.23 ERA in his last six starts. He struck out four and walked one.

"We're just having a lot of fun," Estrada said as he teammates roared in the background while watching Washington post a six-run inning. "That's the great thing about our team. We have a real fun group and I think that's helped us this season. Even when it looked like we were out of it, we never gave up. We just kept playing."

Estrada wound up having more fun than he expected. He said he felt "weird" while warming up before the game because he had gone seven days between starts.

"It took me a while to feel comfortable," Estrada said. "I felt like I hadn't pitch in a long time."

Milwaukee manager Ron Roenicke felt the extra rest helped Estrada.

"I know pitchers like to stay in their routine but when you get to this time of the season guys need more time off," Roenicke said. "The extra days off can really help and they did in Marco's case. His command wasn't really good early but it got a lot better as the game went on."

Axford worked around Andrew McCutchen's leadoff home run in the ninth inning, his 29th, for his 30th save in 38 opportunities. The homer broke a string of 22 scoreless innings for the Pittsburgh bullpen.

Milwaukee has won four straight games, seven of eight and 22 of 28. They entered the day 2 1-2 games behind St. Louis in the race for the second NL wild card.

The Brewers were 12 1-2 games out of the second wild card on Aug. 19, three weeks after trading ace pitcher Zack Greinke to the Los Angeles Angels.

"If anything, the Greinke trade gave us some motivation," Axford said. "We didn't feel in the clubhouse like we were out of it. We never gave up."

Pittsburgh has lost 14 of 18 and 20 of 27 to drop to 74-74, the first time they have been at .500 since they were 26-26 on June 2. The Pirates, who began the day 3 1-2 games behind the Cardinals, have had 19 consecutive losing seasons, a major North American professional sports record.

"We haven't played well and it's been for a while," Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said. "So, you know, we had earned the position we were in before; we've earned this position as well. The season's 162 games for a reason."

Milwaukee's Norichika Aoki led off the game by hitting rookie Kyle McPherson's second pitch into the stands in right for his ninth home run. Aoki, Segura and Rickie Weeks each had two of the Brewers' 11 hits.

McPherson (0-1) took the loss in his first major league start, giving up two runs and seven hits in 4 1-3 innings. The Brewers scored their other run off McPherson in the fifth inning. Segura hit a leadoff double, advanced on a balk and scored on Estrada's single.

McPherson had made seven relief appearances, posting a 1.54 ERA, and was moved into the rotation in place of James McDonald, who was 2-5 with a 6.66 ERA in his last 10 games.

Segura tripled to lead off the seventh and scored when second baseman Brock Holt was charged with an error for mishandling Estrada's grounder. That put Milwaukee ahead 3-0.

McCutchen and Pedro Alvarez had two hits apiece for Pittsburgh.

The Brewers have won six straight games against Pittsburgh.

"Sometimes you just have your mojo against another team and that seems to be the case with us against the Pirates," Roenicke said.

NOTES: Pittsburgh 2B Neil Walker sat out for the second time in three days because of lower back soreness, an injury that caused him to miss 15 straight games from Aug. 29-Sept. 14, though he did walk as a pinch-hitter in the eighth inning. Hurdle said Walker's availability will be determined on a daily basis for the remainder of the season. ... Milwaukee GM Doug Melvin is on the trip along with the rest of the Brewers' baseball operations staff as they are holding player evaluation meetings with Roenicke and the coaching staff. ... Rookie RHP Mike Fiers (9-7, 3.23) is scheduled to pitch for Milwaukee against LHP Wandy Rodriguez (11-13, 3.65) on Thursday in the finale of the three-game series. Rodriguez is 4-1 with a 1.83 ERA in his last six games, including one relief appearance.
