Cambodia arrests Pirate Bay co-founder

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (AP) ? A co-founder of popular file sharing website The Pirate Bay was arrested in Cambodia at the request of Sweden, where he faces a one-year prison term for violating copyright laws, authorities said Monday.

Cambodian authorities arrested Gottfrid Svartholm Warg on Thursday at a home he had rented in the capital, Phnom Penh, said national police spokesman Kirth Chantharith.

"He is being detained in Cambodia and we are waiting to expel him," Kirth Chantharith said. Cambodia has no extradition treaty with Sweden but has requested details of Svartholm Warg's crime in order to process his handover, he said, adding that Cambodia would act as quickly as possible.

Svartholm Warg and the site's three other founders were convicted in 2009 by a Swedish court of assisting copyright infringement by helping millions of the site's users to illegally download music, movies and computer games. All were sentenced to one year in prison and ordered to pay 30 million kronor ($3.6 million) to entertainment companies, including Warner Bros., Sony Music Entertainment, EMI and Columbia Pictures.

Svartholm Warg failed to show up at an appeal hearing in 2010. At the time, his defense attorney told the court he had received text messages from Svartholm Warg's mother saying her son had fallen ill in Cambodia and would not appear in court.

The appeals court reduced the prison sentences for the three other co-founders from one year to between four and 10 months and raised the amount they have to pay in damages to the entertainment industry to 46 million kronor ($6.5 million).

All four defendants denied the charges, arguing that The Pirate Bay doesn't actually host any copyright-protected material itself. Instead, it provides a forum for users to download content through so-called torrent files. The technology allows users to transfer parts of a large file from several different users, increasing download speeds.

Kirth Chantharith said a group of Swedish officials was scheduled to arrive in Cambodia on Monday or Tuesday to present documents concerning the case and discuss procedures for returning Svartholm Warg.

Windows 8 may get Aero Glass back via modder

In May, Microsoft revealed the new look of the desktop for Windows 8. The company said that it wanted the desktop to have more of a "Metro" (now Modern) look. Part of the changes included getting rid of the Aero Glass desktop look that was first introduced in Windows Vista. Microsoft said simply that ", We have moved beyond Aero Glass."

However, there are still Windows users who love the Aero Glass look of the desktop and were not happy that it would not be making an appearance in Windows 8. Now, a software modder claims he has found a way to put Aero Glass back into the RTM version of Windows 8.

In a post on PCBeta.com's message boards, the modder, who goes by the handle "kwanmacher", claims that he has put in the Aero Glass look in the Windows 8 desktop by adding in the source codes. He has also added a screenshot in his post to prove he got the mod to work.

This person claims that he will make the files for the Windows 8 Aero Glass mod freely available to download sometime next week. Hopefully they will work as advertised. We also hope Microsoft allows this kind of mod to be released for Windows 8.

Thanks to FaiKee for the tip!

Utility restores electrical power to storage facilities: LOOP

HOUSTON (Reuters) - The Louisiana Offshore Oil Port, which handles 13 percent of foreign crude coming to the United States, said Entergy Corp had restored the electrical power supply to onshore oil storage facilities in Clovelly, Louisiana, on Saturday.

The LOOP had been operating the Clovelly storage site, which has underground salt caverns and above-ground storage tanks, with diesel-powered generators.

The LOOP completed the transition from diesel generators to the commercial power supply by Sunday, said LOOP spokeswoman Barb Hestermann.

Ryan says he misstated marathon claim

Republican Paul Ryan now says he didn't run a marathon in less than three hours as he claimed in a nationally broadcast interview.

The vice presidential hopeful acknowledged Saturday he had misstated his marathon time by more than an hour. He released a statement correcting the record after Runner's World magazine found evidence he had completed one marathon, in 1990, and finished in just over four hours.

Ryan told radio host Hugh Hewitt last month he had run a "two hour and fifty-something" marathon. That's a pace of less than 7 minutes per mile for the 26.2 mile course ? extremely fast for recreational runners.

Ryan said he should have rounded his marathon time to four hours, not three.

Nothing new in letter from mining vice-president

Published: August 30, 2012 4:00 PM

Dear editor,

Ms. Waterman?s letter (Record, Aug. 29) doesn?t offer new information; it simply reflects the plethora of form letters we?ve all received and sites EA processes found on websites we?ve thoroughly researched.

She assumes we?re prejudging this government?s EA process for Raven Coal when in fact; we?re using structured and established guidelines in the Environmental Assessment Act to measure the EA agencies? performance on managing and guiding Raven coal's legal requirements.

Two years ago I asked the CEAA for evidence of environmentally responsible coal mining examples, anywhere in the world, and nothing has ever been produced.

If Ms. Waterman thinks we ought to respect the long-standing arsenic and sulfate problems due to Quinsam Coal?s failure to deal with concerns expressed by scientists, and that it?s safe industry practise to have 30 times higher levels than provincial guidelines, I?d like to know what Environmental Assessment Act she?s reading?

And, where?s this evidence of revenues from the mining industry going into health and education? Government cuts to health and education over the past few years don?t support this fairy tale.

The only rich in the history of coal mining on Vancouver island was experienced by the very few who left a dark legacy for many taxpayers today to pay the bill to clean up their toxic mess left behind, like the Union Bay Coal Hills at a price of $17 million.

Perhaps Ms. Waterman should do her homework and earn the right to comment on our situation because, unlike Ms. Waterman who sits in an office in the big city, we?re here on the front lines, living and breathing this nightmare of a proposal.

Her life, livelihood and lifestyle will never be adversely affected by the looming threat of this Raven coal mine, which has already negatively affect our lives and wasted our time.

The unprecedented amount of opposition to Raven Coal exists because we are very well-informed of the process and the history because it?s our lives that are at stake.

We live here, this is our home and it?s clear Ms. Waterman is advocating for something written for ads and brochures, far from our reality.

Dollar falls after Bernanke speech

NEW YORK (AP) ? The dollar is falling against most major currencies after Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said that the central bank can do more to help the U.S. economy rebound.

Traders have been speculating about the odds of another round of quantitative easing from the Fed. It has already launched two rounds of bond purchases, most recently in August 2010. Those purchases push interest rates lower and can weaken the dollar, which is why traders are trimming their holdings in the currency.

Bernanke made his comments at an annual Fed conference in Wyoming's Jackson Hole resort Friday.

The euro rose to $1.2560 in afternoon trading from $1.2507. The British pound rose to $1.5857 from $1.5787.

The dollar fell to 78.31 Japanese yen from 78.63 yen.
