Liver protein crucial for pregnancy

June 30, 2013 ? A protein first shown to function in the liver plays a crucial role in pregnancy in mice and has a key role in the human menstrual cycle, according to researchers at the University of Montreal. Mice that were genetically engineered not to produce the liver receptor homolog-1 (Lrh-1) molecule were unable to create the uterine conditions necessary for establishing and sustaining pregnancy, resulting in the formation of defective placentas. The researchers then showed that Lhr-1 was present in the human uterus and the essential processes related to the success of early gestation.

"We previously showed that Lrh-1 is essential for ovulation. Our newest studies have revealed that it is plays an important role in the uterus, raising the possibility that Lrh-1 deficiency contributes to human gestational failure," explained lead author Bruce Murphy, of the university's Animal Reproduction Research Centre. "We worked with mice before looking at human tissues. I believe it premature to propose determination of Lrh-1 in uterine biopsies as a diagnostic tool, but we are working on determining the receptor's pattern of expression across the menstrual cycle."

The researchers also looked at whether hormone replacement therapy might restore normal uterine functions in the mice. "Progesterone did not make a difference. Although hormone therapy allowed for the embryos to implant, we saw problems with the lining in the uterus, compromised formation of the placenta, fetal growth retardation and fetal death," Murphy said. "However, there are new Lrh-1 agonists and antagonists, currently in clinical trials to treat hepatic consequences of type II diabetes, and thus therapeutic intervention might be possible."

The study was published in Nature Medicine on June 30, 2013, and was funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. The US National Institutes of Health funded collaborators at Baylor University that contributed to the study.?

Hollande urges talks to resolve EU-China trade row

A bitter row between the European Union and Beijing over new duties on Chinese solar panels should be settled amicably through talks, French President Francois Hollande said Tuesday.

"France has always wanted such differences to be resolved through negotiation and in a spirit of appeasement," Hollande told a team of visiting Chinese business leaders.

He also urged them to step up investments in France to attain a balance.

"There are a lot of French investments in China," said Hollande, adding that "we have nothing to fear ... from Chinese investments on the condition support creating jobs and production."

China accounts for just four percent of foreign investments into France, compared to 16 percent in Germany and 23 percent in the United States.

The visit comes amid an escalating trade dispute between China and the EU.

The European Commission, the EU's executive arm, imposed an average tariff of 11.8 percent on solar panel imports from China -- which will rise to more than 47 percent in August if negotiations fail to resolve the dispute.

China hit back at the tariffs by launching an anti-dumping and anti-subsidy inquiry into sales of European wine, which analysts said could hit wine exports from France and Italy, stoking fears of the dispute escalating.

The solar panel tariffs, which were introduced this month on a provisional basis, have sparked divisions among EU nations, who will vote in December on whether to make them permanent.

France had supported the Commission's decision to impose the temporary tariffs in order to bring China to the negotiating table.

In addition to the solar cells, the EU also decided this month to challenge China at the World Trade Organization after Beijing slapped duties on some steel products, and has threatened an investigation into China's telecom equipment firms.

Total trade between the two sides fell 3.7 percent year-on-year in 2012, with China's imports from the bloc rising 0.4 percent to $212 billion, while shipments in the opposite direction tumbled 6.2 percent to $334 billion, according to Chinese customs data.

"Monsters University" roared to the top of the box office again.

Family-friendly "Monsters University" topped U.S. and Canadian movie charts for a second straight weekend, fending off competition from two new releases, the female buddy comedy "The Heat" and the explosion-filled thriller "White House Down."

"Monsters University" from Walt Disney Co's Pixar animation studio sold $46.2 million worth of tickets at domestic theaters from Friday through Sunday, according to studio estimates. The movie is a prequel to the 2001 hit "Monsters Inc."

"The Heat," headlined by Melissa McCarthy and Sandra Bullock, landed in second place, grabbing $40 million. Bullock plays an uptight FBI agent paired with a loud and aggressive cop (McCarthy) to bring down a drug lord.

"World War Z," the zombie thriller starring Brad Pitt as a former U.N. crisis specialist fighting the undead, slipped one notch to finish third in its second week of release, earning $29.8 million during the weekend domestically.

The action movie "White House Down," the story of a terrorist attack in the U.S. capital, finished in the No. 4 slot with $25.7 million. The movie from "Independence Day" director Roland Emmerich stars Channing Tatum, Jamie Foxx and Maggie Gyllenhaal.

Sony Corp's movie studio released "White House Down." Paramount Pictures, a unit of Viacom Inc, distributed "World War Z." "The Heat" was distributed by the 20th Century Fox studio, a unit of 21st Century Fox, part of the company formerly known as News Corp.

Nick Jonas takes part in Dirk Nowitzki's celebrity baseball game in Texas

While in Texas this weekend, Nick Jonas joined the fun at NBA star Dirk Nowitzki's 12th annual celebrity baseball game in Frisco yesterday. The charity game benefits both the Dirk Nowitzki Foundation and the Heroes Foundation, which is a non-profit initiative bringing sports training and competition to children and adults with physical and intellectual disabilities in the Dallas Texas area.

Nick was involved in a collision with another player on the last play of the game that left the singer bruised, but Nick assured his fans on Twitter that the incident was "no big deal".

LOL the height difference between Nick and Dirk is hilarious! Glad he wasn't hurt--people there said he just got up and finished running to home plate, but he was holding an ice pack on his face after the game.

Biden gives GOP a tea party label

RICHMOMD, Va. (AP) ? Vice President Joe Biden continued a busy political pace Saturday, appearing with Virginia's Democratic gubernatorial candidate at the swing state's premier party fundraiser and ridiculing this fall's conservative Republican statewide ticket as extreme captives of tea party ideology.

Biden brought about 1,000 Democrats to their feet repeatedly at the Jefferson-Jackson Dinner barely four months ahead of the nation's only competitive governor's race. His appearances at state fundraisers haved evoked speculation that he is laying his footing for a 2016 presidential bid.

"Ladies and gentlemen, we stand for equal rights and women's rights," Biden said. "With virtually zero support from the Republicans, the president and I have moved the country from the worst recession since the Great Depression to 38 months of private-sector growth."

With Democratic gubernatorial nominee Terry McAuliffe at his side, Biden took aim at McAuliffe's opponent, state Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, who won the GOP nomination with strong tea party support and his socially conservative ticket mates.

"There is so much they stand for that is so at odds with the value set of Virginians," Biden said.

The vice president warned that a GOP victory in Virginia would only galvanize the tea party's grip on the GOP in Congress, where he said even longtime moderate Republicans are fearful of a primary challenge if they don't do the tea party's bidding.

"They are so afraid of a challenge by the tea party that they vote against what is the right vote. Imagine what they will do to Barack and me if Terry McAuliffe loses," he said.

A McAuliffe victory, he said, would "send a strong signal to Republicans across America that there's no reason to be afraid of these extreme guys."

Before speaking to activists who paid $175 or more per ticket, Biden joined McAuliffe, a longtime confidante of Bill and Hillary Clinton, in surprising patrons at a Richmond restaurant, shaking hands before wolfing down two plates of fried whiting.

Among other campaign events this season, Biden aided Democratic Rep. Ed Markey in a Massachusetts special election ? Markey won, thus keeping Secretary of State John Kerry's old seat in Democratic hands ? and held a series of closed-door "donor-maintenance" events in Washington.

Sen. Tim Kaine, elected on the same Virginia ballot as President Barack Obama last fall, said it's too early for Democrats to take sides in a potential nomination contest between Biden and Hillary Clinton, but he counseled both to try pragmatism over progressive partisanship.

"I think the Virginia Democratic success model is, we'll let the other guys be the ideology people and we will be the work-together, compromise, make-things-happen party. That's been the model that has allowed Dems to win," said Kaine, like McAuliffe, a former Democratic National Committee chairman.

In speeches warming up the crowd, Kaine and Sen. Mark Warner congratulated gay-rights activists for the ruling that cleared the way for same-sex marriages in 13 states but not in Virginia, where a 7-year-old amendment to the state Constitution prohibits it. And both hailed the immigration reform bill that they supported ? it now faces an uncertain future in a conservative Republican-led House.

The Cuccinelli campaign joined the Virginia GOP in using Biden's visit as an occasion to attack the ticket for Obama's clean-energy initiative, warning that it will devastate Virginia's struggling coal industry and drive up utility bills.

"With no economic plan or message to tout, Vice President Biden and Terry McAuliffe doubled down on an empty strategy of division and false attacks tonight," the campaign said in a statement that referred to the "Obama/Biden/McAuliffe War On Coal" and government-run healthcare as "harmful to job growth and economic opportunity in Virginia."

State GOP Chairman Pat Mullins called it "the most anti-coal slate of candidates ever fielded in the history of Virginia," a distinction intended to lock up the rural, rugged but independent southwestern tip of the state for the GOP in a neck-and-neck governor's race.

Republicans weren't alone in protesting Biden's trip. About three dozen environmental activists opposed to construction of the proposed Keystone XL pipeline stood on a street corner as Biden's motorcade passed, waving placards that read "Say No to Big Oil" and chanting "Hey, Joe, you ought to know, Keystone pipeline's got to go."
