What is Engineers for Overseas Development?

Engineers for Overseas Development Ltd (EFOD) is a charity designed to assist in the development and training of young professionals in the construction industry by challenging members to plan and manage construction projects to alleviate poverty in Sub Saharan Africa.

We (EFOD North-West) have recently launched of our new project: Grain for Gain. The aim of the project is to promote more sustainable agriculture by building a grain store for a cooperative of local women in the village of Mam Raing, Eastern Region, Uganda. At present, the cooperative does not have the resources to build their own grain store, but with the assistance of EFOD designing and raising funds for construction, we hope to complete the project by summer 2014.

Grain for Gain?

Subsistence agriculture is the main economic activity, meaning that most people farm for their own private consumption. As there is limited capacity to safely store food within the family home, what is grown is sold almost as soon as it is harvested. This causes high seasonal price fluctuations where prices are very low at harvest time, but rise to unaffordable levels as demand begins to exceed supply. With a monopoly on food storage, a wealthy minority of wholesalers profit disproportionately from these fluctuations. Lack of competition in the storage and food distribution market has also led to unfair and unethical business practises. The impact of these price rises are felt hardest by the poor, who are already struggling to afford adequate amounts of basic food items. Malnutrition levels have risen substantially in the eastern region of Uganda due to this problem. Sadly, as the rich are getting richer by exploiting the market, the poor are becoming desperately so.

By building a grain store we will enable the cooperative to purchase excess grain at harvest time when prices are low, providing communities with safe storage facilities for harvested crops all year round. This will not only ensure local food security throughout the seasons, but will give communities greater control over when to sell crops and at what price. Stored grains can be sold later in the season at an increased yet fair price, giving surrounding areas a dependable alternative to the instability of the commercial market. As the grain store will effectively be an autonomous business, the finances it generates will ensure project sustainability while providing much needed funding for community development projects.
